MontaVista Delivers First Linux Trace Toolkit for PowerPC Processor

Toolkit significantly accelerates embedded application development on Linux

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - November 6, 2000 - MontaVista Software, Inc., developer of the Hard Hat™ Linux® operating system for embedded applications, today announced availability of the Linux Trace Toolkit for PowerPC developers.

The Linux trace toolkit is a suite of tools designed to extract and interpret execution details of multiple programs from the Linux operating system. Specifically, it enables users to extract processor utilization and allocation information over specified periods of execution.

Embedded Linux is the operating system of choice for a rapidly growing market of pervasive-computing devices. For its part, MontaVista is committed to bringing cutting- edge tools and comprehensive services to the Linux open-source development community. "Embedded-system designers need superior development and debugging tools for both applications and system software." comments Jim Ready, CEO of MontaVista software and embedded Linux pioneer "The Linux Trace Toolkit helps engineers visualize and measure the detailed timing of their application in the embedded Linux environment,".

MontaVista's Linux Trace Toolkit builds on Karim Yaghmour's- open source IA-32/x86 Linux Trace Toolkit and offers the first kernel tracing tool for PowerPC processors. The PowerPC toolkit enables users to capture and graphically display processor utilization and allocation information. Processor utilization and allocation information over specified periods is available for logging and analysis, including comprehensive listings of probed events. The graphical, integrated Linux Trace Toolkit environment, based on the GTK+ library, can also plot these results and perform specific searches through key data sequences. The following screen-shot links illustrate this functionality: event view, process view, raw data.

Availability

Both the x86 and the PowerPC versions function with Hard Hat Linux, based on the version 2.2.14 Linux kernel. Linux Trace Tool source code is available for immediate download at ftp://ftp.mvista.com/pub/LTT. Support for Linux kernel 2.4.0 and other Hard Hat Linux target CPUs is forthcoming.
