| MontaVista Launches New
Version of Industry-Leading Embedded Platform
MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1 Features
New Comprehensive DevRocket Development Environment, Windows-hosted Cross
Development, Updated System Components and Tools
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 11, 2003 — MontaVista
Software Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced
MontaVista® Linux® Professional Edition 3.1 (Pro), the next generation
of the company’s cutting edge embedded operating system (OS) and
development platform. In this version of Pro, MontaVista introduces a
new, integrated graphical development environment, Linux, Solaris and
now Windows-based hosting, and updates core system components to meet
the rapidly evolving needs of today’s advanced devices. Pro is widely
used in a broad range of applications for managed infrastructure and networking,
medical/imaging, instrumentation and control, consumer electronics, aerospace
and defense, and other markets.
“With Pro 3.1, MontaVista continues its commitment to provide embedded
developers with the latest Linux technology across the broadest range
of hardware in the industry,” commented Jacob Lehrbaum, product
marketing manager, MontaVista Software. “Device manufacturers will
benefit from the enhanced development environment and improvements in
real-time and networking technologies.”
MontaVista DevRocket Development Environment
MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1 introduces MontaVista® DevRocket™
1.0, a new comprehensive integrated development environment (IDE), built
on industry standard Eclipse technology, that offers a wide choice of
targets and host platforms, including Linux, Windows and Solaris.
MontaVista DevRocket integrates and streamlines essential development
activities, including compilation, editing, debugging and revision control,
and supports integration of key third party Eclipse development tools
and components. DevRocket also lets developers configure and build ready-to-deploy
platform images, with easy-to-use project “wizards.” (To learn
more about DevRocket, visit http://www.mvista.com/news/2003/devrocket.html).
“MontaVista DevRocket is an advanced development environment designed
to accelerate development activities and let developers optimize use of
target resources. By incorporating MontaVista DevRocket into MontaVista
Linux Professional Edition, MontaVista empowers customers to build better
products in less time than ever before,” added Lehrbaum.
Cross Development from Microsoft® Windows®
MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1 enables developers to use Microsoft
Windows 2000 and XP workstations to build applications targeting MontaVista
Linux. Previously, MontaVista supported only Linux and Solaris hosts.
This new capability represents a significant investment by MontaVista
to address the wide use of Windows as an embedded development host. To
create the industry’s most comprehensive Windows-hosted cross development
suite for Linux, MontaVista built on existing open source components and
leveraged the host-independence of Java-based Eclipse. Notably, MontaVista
also pioneered new technology for creation of embedded Linux file systems,
device nodes and target images from Windows, as well as extending MontaVista’s
unique networked cross development model to Windows. Thus, unlike other
embedded Linux offerings, the Windows version of DevRocket offers developers
an integrated Windows native “look and feel” and user experience.
Expanded Technology Support and Other New Features in Pro 3.1
MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 3.1 boasts the industry’s
most comprehensive support for embedded processor architectures, CPU boards
and software components. Pro now targets more than 30 processors from
eight industry-leading architectures. These processors populate the more
than 100 boards supported in version 3.1, including 20 new board-level
platforms. Host-based tools and embedded target-based deployment components
make up the more than 250 software packages in the release. Pro 3.1 also
extends support for the latest GNU tool chains based on GDB 6.0 and GCC
3.3.
Pro 3.1 is based on the 2.4.20 Linux kernel and includes numerous MontaVista
technology enhancements and components that will become standard with
the upcoming 2.6 kernel. Other new features include enhanced support for
IPv6 built on USAGI project technology, and support for VLAN (Virtual
Local Area Networks) configuration. Pro 3.1 also incorporates enhanced
real-time capabilities including high-resolution POSIX timers, the O(1)
real-time scheduler and the innovative MontaVista fully preemptible kernel.
"MontaVista Software continues its track record of development and
delivery of leading-edge technology. MontaVista Linux Professional Edition
3.1 is built from a single integrated source code base, with support for
the industry's broadest set of target hardware," said Mark Orvek,
director of engineering, MontaVista Software. "Pro comprises a comprehensive
embedded OS platform with pre-built and fully-tested binaries for every
system supported. Cross and native development tools are included along
with complete source code to facilitate customization."
