TOKYO, Nov. 5, 2002 — MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced that MontaVista™ Linux® Professional Edition 2.1 is the chosen operating system for the CoCoon Channel Server, the new Internet-connected Personal Video Recorder (PVR) from Sony (NYSE: SNE).

MontaVista Linux supports a range of enhanced interactive features in advanced consumer electronics products such as CoCoon, by providing high performance, real-time capability and service reliability. MontaVista Linux is the widely used cross-development platform from MontaVista Software. As a standard development platform for embedded designs, it enables developers to create a broad range of applications, from solutions for consumer devices to highly available telecommunications and data communications equipment. According to a recent market research report from Venture Development Corporation (VDC) consumer electronics is the fastest growing market segment for Linux, at an annual growth rate of 49.0% and reaching $149.6 million in shipments by 2006. VDC also estimated that consumer electronics will be the largest segment of the embedded Linux market by 2006 with 43.2 percent of total revenue of $346 million. The feature-rich MontaVista Professional Edition is already being widely used for a wide variety of embedded application designs in consumer electronics.
