MontaVista’s announces Carrier Grade Edition for ARM

MontaVista’s six 9’s capabilities combined with pioneering low power devices deliver a new level of capabilities for ARM basednetwork infrastructure solutions

Barcelona, Spain, February 28, 2012 – MontaVista® Software, LLC, a leader in embedded Linux® commercialization services, today announced the release of MontaVista Carrier Grade Linux for ARM. In four years, the number of network devices will be double the size of the world population, according to Cisco VNI, 2011. This explosion roughly equates to four times the amount of network traffic ushering the world into the Zeta byte era. Providers of next generation network equipment can’t build out this quadrupling of capacity using the traditional power hungry architectures. Every strategy from cloud computing to right sizing performance and power in the underlying hardware must be deployed in order to achieve the momentous goal in a power envelope the world’s power grid can sustain.

MontaVista has been pioneering many Linux first on ARM for over a decade. Key features like Execute in ROM, Dynamic Power Management, ARM real-time support, and being the first Linux in a mobile phone are all capabilities pioneered by MontaVista and the ARM Licensees.

As the energy-efficient architecture leader, ARM has been pioneering low power devices for decades. No surprise that ARM Licensees have a new line of chips targeted at the network infrastructure coming to market. Building on the momentum of ARM® Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ processor-based solutions already used in the infrastructure market, there will be several Cortex A-15 processor-based solutions hitting the market in 2012.

MontaVista, the leader in Carrier Grade Linux with proven six 9’s performance, has ported their 6th generation of CGE to the ARM architecture on ECONA 3, an ARM1176™ based processor. Additionally MontaVista is committed to the on-going expansion of their telecom solution to ARMv7 processors, including Cortex- A9 and Cortex-A15 in the coming year.

The combination of MontaVista Carrier Grade Edition 6 and ARM solutions will pioneer a new era for the Telecom market in the Zeta byte Era delivering reliability and low power devices with high performance.

“ARM is pleased that MontaVista is expanding its Telecom Solutions to include support for the ARM architecture. Network infrastructure is a key market where ARM partners can deliver new levels of performance and energy-efficiency using ARM Cortex-A series processors,” said Lance Howarth, executive vice-president of marketing, ARM. “This is an important development as our partners seek to deliver highly reliable, high-performance multicore solutions for energy-efficient wireline and wireless infrastructure."
