Cavium Networks and MontaVista Software Team to Deliver
Record VPN Performance for SOHO, SME Secure Gateways

Cavium NITROX Lite Security Processor and MontaVista Linux solution for Intel® IXP4XX network processors achieves 150Mbps of measured IPsec VPN system performance

Santa Clara, CA, and Sunnyvale, CA, October 27, 2003 -- Cavium Networks, the cost and performance leader in security processing, and MontaVista Software, the company powering the embedded revolution, today announced a combined solution that offers 2x – 3x faster IPsec VPN performance on Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) IXP4XX network processors compared to existing solutions at similar price-points. This high-performance solution enables SOHO and SME gateway OEMs and ODMs (outsourced development manufacturers) to cost-effectively build security appliances that support higher broadband speeds of 50Mbps VDSL and Fast Ethernet deployment in countries like Japan and Korea. Additionally, the Cavium and MontaVista Software solution provides significantly greater headroom on the IXP4XX to implement richer application functionality, such as firewalls, deep packet inspection and voice-over-IP.

Cavium also announced a Mini-PCI card (dimensions: 2” x 2.3”) using its NITROX Lite CN501 security processor, which enables easy and rapid integration into ODM hardware designs, including ADI Engineering’s Coyote Gateway Reference Design. The NITROX Security processor is accompanied by a complete IPsec stack based on FreeS/wan and drivers integrated with MontaVista® Linux® Professional Edition. In addition to IPsec VPN gateway acceleration, the Cavium NITROX processor accelerates expanding security applications like Voice over IPsec, SSL VPNs and Wireless LAN security (802.11i).

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition is a complete embedded operating system and cross-development environment. This award-winning product contains an impressive array of cross-development tools for system and application development, unparalleled processor and board support, and hundreds of deployable utilities, libraries, drivers, and other run-time components.

“The need for encrypted bandwidth and richer security applications is increasing at a steady rate. The combination of Intel IXP4XX network processors with Cavium NITROX Lite security processors and MontaVista Linux provides high security performance in a cost-effective fashion for SOHO/SME gateway devices,” said Doug Davis, general manager, Intel Network Processor Division. “Having such a solution readily available will help OEMs bring their products to market faster.”

"We are pleased to partner with Cavium to enable a high-performance security solution with the Intel IXP4XX and Cavium CN501 based on MontaVista Linux Professional Edition," said Sheila Baker, vice president, Marketing, MontaVista Software. "This offers our mutual customers a robust operating system and development environment, along with the leading security performance to develop reliable products.”

"The integration of Cavium’s security processors with a top-tier Linux operating system on the Intel IXP4XX supports our vision of bringing higher performance security at continually lower costs to enable a 100% secure and authenticated internet," said Rajiv Khemani, vice president, marketing, Cavium. "With this solution, we have raised the price and performance bar for security in broadband and SME devices – and are very pleased with the customer reception.”
