Sunnyvale, Calif., and Linköping, Sweden, July 29, 2003 — MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution, and C.N.S. Systems AB, which develops and markets systems for communication, navigation and surveillance for civil aviation, maritime and land markets, today announced that MontaVista® Linux® Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 3.0 is the chosen operating system for the data management, and monitoring and control subsystems in the new VDL 4000/GS I ground station from C.N.S. Systems.

The VDL 4000/GS I is part of an integrated system for surveillance, navigation and communication services between ground stations and mobile units, or among mobile units that are either mounted in aircraft or in vehicles operating in airport areas. All C.N.S. products for aviation are based on the VDL Mode 4 digital radio link, which is a new standard for air traffic control in Europe.

“MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition provided us with a robust and stable platform and enabled us to get to market in an extremely short time period, ” said Tommy Bergström, chief technology officer, C.N.S. Systems. “We also appreciated MontaVista Software’s great regional support and the fact that CGE has been validated to work seamlessly with our chosen hardware platform — Force Computer’s CPCI-735 board.”

About CGE
MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 3.0 combines the leading technological advancements of Linux with robust carrier class features to create the most advanced, standards-based, open-architecture carrier-grade platform available. CGE provides the scalability, dependability and functionality required by telecommunications and data communications applications such as soft switches, BSC/RNC (base station controllers/radio network controllers), media gateways, control plane applications in core/edge, media servers and core switches. CGE provides essential high availability features including CompactPCI hot swap drivers, redundant Ethernet and RAID1. It also delivers a hardened driver architecture, resource monitoring and fault management services, and other carrier-grade capabilities. CGE is compliant with the Open Systems Development Lab (OSDL) Carrier Grade Linux 1.1 specification.

“Commercial airline pilots and airport traffic controllers will benefit greatly from the new VDL 4000, in terms of improved personal safety, optimized logistics and cost-effective solutions for data communications,” said Cees Boshuizen, vice president of sales in Europe, MontaVista Software. “Before long, C.N.S. will be shipping hundreds of these ground station units to airports all over Europe. We are delighted to enable C.N.S. Systems in this initiative.”
