MontaVista Linux Powers NEC’s New Home Server

Leading Linux Platform Chosen for Performance and Service Reliability

TOKYO, Nov. 20, 2002 — MontaVista Software, Inc., the company powering the embedded revolution™, today announced the selection of MontaVista™ Linux® as the operating system for AX10, the new home AV server from NEC (TSE: 6701).

The NEC AX10 home server is a disk-based recorder for audio-visual applications and is one of the “new style” of products developed by NEC as part of its personal computer line. With this “TV in a PC,” consumers can view, listen, edit, and save TV programs onto a hard disk or videotape. The AX10 lets users record broadcast content even when they are away from home, by using an i-mode cellular phone. It also connects personal PCs in a home network (wireless, Ethernet, etc.) with a variety of audio-visual equipment and distributes recorded content to every TV or PC in the home.

The next generation of consumer products requires improved performance, lower power consumption, flexible and scalable architectures, and advanced networking capability. MontaVista Linux supports a range of enhanced features in advanced consumer electronics products such as the AX10, by providing high performance, real-time capability and service reliability. The feature-rich MontaVista Linux Professional Edition is already being deployed in a wide variety of consumer electronics applications such as smart mobile phones, wireless PDAs, set-top boxes and automotive telematics.

“The consumer electronics market presents ever more challenging requirements as it migrates from stand-alone devices to intelligent, networked appliances, in which Linux is becoming the systems software of choice,” said Hitoshi Arima, vice president, sales (Japan), MontaVista Software. “We aggressively support this trend by working with leading consumer electronics companies like NEC, and enhancing MontaVista Linux to meet the performance, scalability, connectivity, and reliability needs of next-generation consumer products.”

Availability
AX10, the new home server from NEC will be available from NEC beginning Nov 28, in Japan. MontaVista Linux Professional Edition is available from MontaVista Software and the company’s sales and distribution channels worldwide. It is offered as a product subscription, providing customers with the MontaVista Linux kernel, utilities, development tools, software updates, access to the MontaVista Zone and full technical support.
