MontaVista
Supports New IBM 440GP PowerPC Processor
Targeted
for Communications, Networking, Storage and Internet Devices
SUNNYVALE,
Calif. March 19, 2002 - MontaVista Software Inc., the company
powering the embedded revolution, today announced that MontaVista
Linux® will support IBMs new 440GP PowerPC microprocessor,
which has been developed for use in communications, networking,
gaming, printers, storage and Internet appliances. IBM announced
this new processor family last week at the Embedded Systems Conference
in San Francisco. It is the first true Book E compliant integrated
processor within the PowerPC family that will be available to customers.
The
low-cost, low-power, highly integrated IBM PowerPC 440GP embedded
microprocessor is designed for mid to high-end devices that require
a rich mix of embedded peripherals. The PowerPC 440GP provides a
performance and functional upgrade path for users of the popular
IBM PowerPC 405GP processor, while maintaining user application
software compatibility.
"Linux
has become a requirement for many embedded applications, and the
multi-tasking capabilities of MontaVista Linux is an ideal match
for our powerful new chip," said Steve Longoria, marketing
director, Network Processors, IBM Microelectronics. "We believe
that MontaVista Linux coupled with IBMs PowerPC processors
will provide a consistent, scalable development road map for our
mutual customers."
MontaVista
Software was one of the first embedded software companies to develop
a Linux-based platform for the IBM PowerPC family of processors,
a focus that MontaVista has strongly maintained. The two companies
recently announced
an agreement to ensure the IBM PowerPC microprocessors continue
to be fully
supported by MontaVista Linux® for embedded system and
networking applications.
"Now,
embedded systems developers can couple this next-generation IBM
PowerPC hardware platform with the openness and performance of MontaVistas
powerful embedded Linux environment," said Brian Grega, vice
president, business development, MontaVista Software. "MontaVista
Linux Professional Edition can help customers take advantage of
this powerful, highly integrated new processor family, while enhancing
low power consumption and high integration with peripheral devices."
Availability
MontaVista
Linux Professional Edition 2.1 including support for IBM 440GP will
be available in Q3, 2002, direct from MontaVista and MontaVista
distribution channels worldwide as part of a product subscription,
providing the MontaVista Linux kernel, software updates, utilities,
development tools and one year of technical support.
