Alchemy
Semiconductor Partners with MontaVista to Gain Early Lead in Growing
Internet Edge Device Market
Hard Hat Linux
to Power the Alchemy Au1000 SOC in Embedded Applications
SUNNYVALE,
Calif., Jan. 31, 2001 - Alchemy Semiconductor, Inc., announced
that it is partnering with MontaVista Software to provide an embedded
Linux development tool kit for its Au1000 systems-on-a-chip (SOC)
platform. Alchemy, an Austin-based fabless semiconductor company
will leverage MontaVista's flagship product, Hard Hat Linux, to
target the Internet Edge Device market. Building on Alchemy's expertise
in high performance, low power and high integration SOCs, and MontaVista's
proficiency and track record with embedded Linux, the companies
together address the needs of developers faced with designing better
edge products and bringing them to market more quickly.
The Alchemy Au1000
is a high performance, low power SOC based on the MIPS32 architecture,
power dissipation less than half a watt at 400MHz and targeted at the
Internet Edge Device market: Customer Premise (CPE) products, including
both wireless hand-held enterprise PDAs and remote Internet access products;
and Internet infrastructure products, such as routers and line cards.
Alchemy recognizes
the growing use of MontaVista Hard Hat Linux in embedded applications,
demonstrated dramatically by its numerous customer design wins. "The
Alchemy-MontaVista partnership reflects not only their confidence in
our product family, but also our recognition of their technology acumen
in embedded open source." Said Eric Broockman, President and CEO of
Alchemy Semiconductor. He added, "Jim ReadyÍs team has demonstrated
good business sense and superb technical expertise, and we are eager
to partner with them to make our combined offering a compelling value
proposition for customers."
The MontaVista Hard
Hat Linux development kit will support Alchemy's Au1000 reference platform,
including tools for the MIPS32-based SOC core CPU, and device support
for PCMCIA and USB interfaces, display controller and touch screen,
serial and modem ports, dual Ethernet, home PNA and CODEC audio, telephony
interfaces. "Embedded developers are designing Linux into devices as
diverse as PDAs, web-enabled wireless phones and other network appliances,"
commented Jim Ready, MontaVista CEO and embedded industry pioneer. "Customer
are demanding and we are delivering open source development tools for
key hardware platforms like Alchemy's Au1000".
Hard Hat Linux
- A Pure Play
Hard Hat Linux,
from MontaVista, is based entirely on the standard Linux kernel and
open-source components. It is royalty-free and optimized for embedded
applications, including communications infrastructure and Internet appliances.
MontaVista Software supports pervasive-computing development with its
Hard Hat Linux Cross Development Kit, and the Hard Hat Linux kernel
and embedded operating system. At Comdex 2000, Hard Hat Linux received
Linux Journal and LINUX Business Expo's Penguin Playoff Award for Best
Embedded Solution, chosen from a field of more than 60 exhibitors at
the Linux Business Expo in Las Vegas.
